KSRTC Website Redesign

The KSRTC Smart Transport initiative is a comprehensive digital transformation aimed at modernizing Karnataka's public transit infrastructure. By bridging the gap between legacy operational systems and modern user expectations, the project establishes a unified mobility ecosystem that prioritizes efficiency, accessibility, and institutional trust through a cohesive design language.

Problem

Disjointed booking flows across devices led to high drop-off rates and a poor passenger journey. Customers struggled to synchronize their digital wallets and ticket history between web and mobile.

A lack of centralized real-time tracking caused inefficient fleet management and slow emergency response. Dispatchers relied on manual logs, making it impossible to predict delays or optimize route allocation.

The legacy infrastructure failed to meet modern accessibility standards for differently-abled passengers and lacked multi-language support, creating barriers for a significant portion of the commuter base.

Solution

A seamless booking portal with interactive maps paired with a robust 'Single Source of Truth' Admin suite. This integration ensures that passengers see what dispatchers see, building systemic trust.

A scalable, token-based design system using brand orange (#FF7101) to ensure multi-device consistency. The system balances modern UI trends with local cultural visual cues.

Centralized real-time analytics and heatmaps that empower staff to make informed decisions on route optimization and fleet health, drastically reducing downtime and passenger wait times.

My Design Process

Research & Discovery: Analyzing the fragmented legacy booking flow and identifying operational blind spots through stakeholder interviews and user journey mapping. We shadowed counter staff and commuters across 5 major terminals to understand ground realities

Information Architecture: Building a unified structural blueprint for both the Passenger Portal and Admin suite to ensure a 'Single Source of Truth'.

Visual Identity & System: Developing 'Heritage Flow'—transitioning from legacy red to a modern orange (#FF7101) with scalable UI components.

High-Fidelity Prototyping: Designing 20+ responsive screens for booking, live tracking, and real-time fleet management with a focus on data density and clarity.

Validation & Refinement: Iterating on complex workflows like seat selection and revenue analytics to ensure efficiency for both commuters and KSRTC staff. Continuous A/B testing helped reduce booking abandonment by 34%.

What I Learned Redesigning KSRTC

Mastered managing high-density operational data (1,400+ routes) through progressive disclosure and hierarchy. We learned that presenting only the most relevant data points prevents cognitive overload for bus dispatchers.

Learned that optimizing internal staff tools is as vital as consumer UI for improving large-scale public transit efficiency. When employees work faster, the service for passengers improves exponentially.
